The Long Play

💭 Switch switch SWITCH switch (I say switch a lot in this one)

Last week I was sorta on vacation. Let me explain. My son was at school, my partner was away at a work conference, and my workplace was there too. So I had no work to do that week because no one was around. I planned a little solo date for myself that week, something I hadn't done in a long time. So I took myself on a little solo date to a retro game shop a couple of towns over. I had been wanting to visit it for a while. For a tiny shop, they had quite a lot of things in there. I spent a long time looking through all the games and consoles on display. It took a lot of willpower not to buy the pink DSi on display 😅

The guys working there were also very kind and patient with my (still) terrible French. In the end, I bought Live A Live for the Nintendo Switch. It was 20 Euros. It wasn't a game I was particularly like, waiting to buy. But because I had spent so much time in the store, I kinda felt pressure (completely from myself; it's a me problem, I know) to buy something. I was hoping to find a Dragon Quest game, but the one they had was still 50 Euros, which was too much for me. I had previously tried a demo for Live A Live, and I've heard good things about it, but it never hooked me enough to put it on my wishlist or pull out my credit card. But at the retro game shop, for 20 euros, this kinda called to me. I actually thought it might be a perfect game to play on the Switch Lite. You see, earlier in September, I went to the Netherlands for a family reunion, and my brother gave me his old Switch Lite. So now I have the full Switch family in my house (OG Switch, Switch OLED, Switch Lite, Switch 2). I wouldn't say I'm a collector, but.. I kinda like that I own all the different Switches now.

Anyway, when I got home from this family reunion where my brother had given me the Switch Lite, I got all excited and connected my user profile to it. Except it turns out, you can't have more than two consoles tied to your user profile. And my OG Switch (which is now my son's Switch) and my Switch 2 are already tied to my user profile. Sigh. Nintendo is making it hard again. There is a workaround that lets you still play the games on the Switch Lite by using the option "download data," but yeah, it's just...not as intuitive. So Live A Live gave me an idea. What if my Switch Lite became the place where some of these HD2D games go? Because I feel like the HD2D RPG is kinda like the perfect type of game for this little handheld. And now I'm a bit excited. Because instead of buying the games digitally, I will "hunt" for them at retro game shops. If I find a reasonably priced Dragon Quest HD2D game, you betcha it's going in my Switch Lite collection. Other than that, I also looked through my games library and found some games that I think would be a really great experience on the little handheld. I've dedicated the Switch Lite to the following games now: SteamWorld Quest and Undertale. I'm excited to have found a purpose for the Switch Lite, and I look forward to playing some of these games on it. The Switch Lite is such a good little form factor. I wonder if they'll make a Switch 2 Lite. If they do, that might be the perfect handheld for me. Don't get me wrong, I love my Switch. But I do miss the smaller forms of the DS/3DS. Every time I play on my 3DS, I feel so oddly contained in my world. It's a nice feeling. Especially for someone like me, who is constantly getting distracted by YouTube when I'm really trying to do other things (like write this damn post...)
